Palm’s press conference at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas just ended a few minutes ago. Since they originally announced this “New-ness” event, quite a few people have been speculating that their announcement would be underwhelming at best. We’ve been hearing that Palm has been down for the count for months now. As a long time Palm fan and user, I know I’ve grown bored with them over the past couple of years, but I continue to go back to the Treo or Centro time and time again. Their phones (Palm OS) feel like an old friend to me and I couldn’t help but keep my fingers crossed for the past few weeks while I waited like all of you to hear what they would be announcing. Well, I don’t know about all of you, but I’m really excited about the Palm pre (the name is completely lame though…). So long Palm OS and hello Palm webOS! [click to continue…]

It’s another new netbook, but with a twist: this one isn’t based on the PC architecture, but on a 900 MHz 64-bit MIPS CPU (that means no Windows XP or Vista, ever) and Linux. It also has no internal storage, using form-fitting USB keys preloaded with the operating system instead. It could be ideal for Linux hackers, but does it have a shot at the mass market? Only time will tell. Check out its product page for more specs.

I don’t know about you, but I’m…shall we say…a bit of an aggressive driver. Sometimes. My last car was a Pontiac Grand Prix GT in “arrest me” red, which didn’t remotely help with my penchant for speed on the interstate. I’m sure you all have had one or two experiences with rude gestures or people yelling at you (or you doing the gesturing and yelling). We’ve all had our moments of indiscretion in our early years of driving, no? [click to continue…]

I’ve decided to approach my review of the BlackBerry Storm (9530) Smartphone from Verizon differently than I normally would. Instead of using the phone for several days and posting a complete review all at once, I’m going to journal my experiences with this phone over the next seven days. Be sure to come back each day to see how this phone is working for me and what my final thoughts are at the end of the week. [click to continue…]

This little digital photo frame from Brando has to be the cutest one I’ve seen yet. It has two media slots - USB and SD. The resolution is only 320 x 234, but it not only shows your photos, but can play MP3 and MP4 files as well. All for $89.00.

How’s this for a tiny backup system? Sandisk’s new Ultra Backup USB drives come in capacities of up to 64GBs and have a button that you can press to automatically backup your files. No cables or messy software installs necessary. Security minded folks will be happy to note that they provide both password protection and AES hardware encryption. I wonder if they are OS X compatible… Hmmmmm.

Ringggggggggggggg!
Julie: “Hello?”
Caller: “Hello, is this Julie?”
Julie: “Yes.”
Caller: “This is Columbus Regional Hospital Breast Health Center. We found something on your mammogram and need you to come back in to get it rechecked.”
Julie: “….ok.”
Caller: “How about tomorrow at 8am? We will do another mammogram, and then possibly an ultrasound. You will be here for a few hours, but will know the results before you leave.”
Julie: “….ok.”
Caller: “See you tomorrow.”

Samson is announcing an update to their Zoom H4 Handy Recorder. The H4n. It does look a lot nicer than the previous model. It records high-resolution audio at 24bit/96kHz on SD/SDHC media of up to 32GB and is USB 2.0.
I have a Zoom H2 Handy Recorder, which I know is really popular with a lot of people, but I’ve never really liked it all that much. I always found the tiny mono display too hard to see.

I love a hot cup of tea in the morning to go along with my breakfast. During the work week, I typically drink Stash Tea Premium White tea from individually packaged tea bags. On the weekend I’m more adventurous and like to try different loose teas. I’ll either use a French press or a mesh cup infuser to steep the leaves. Recently I reviewed the Teastick, which is a cool idea, but turned out to be a little awkward to use and clean. In a comment to that review, someone suggested that I try the ingenuiTEA teapot from Adagio Teas, Inc. My friends at ThinkGeek sent me one and here are the results of my review. [click to continue…]

My wife tends to toss her phone in her computer bag with her keys, pager, wallet, and everything else. So, when her new 3G iPhone arrived, we both agreed her fancy new phone required a great case strong/durable enough to protect it. The DRO Concepts Carbon Fiber 3G iPhone Case seemed like a worthy contender for this very difficult task. [click to continue…]

Happy New Year everyone! Where did 2008 go? Did it pass by as quickly for all of you like it did for me? Typically on January 1st, I look back at the previous year and am either very happy that it’s gone, or a little melancholy. I’m not quite sure what I think about the passing of 2008, but as I have done the past two years, I will try to sum up my feelings in a goodbye old year, hello new year post. [click to continue…]

It’s New Year’s Eve, which means it’s time for me to reflect on all the gadgets that passed through my hands during 2008. During this past year, I wrote over 100 reviews. That’s a lot of products that were either really cool, or really lame. I’d like to share some of my favorites with you. These are gadgets that I have continued to use once the review period was completed. [click to continue…]

Last night I was chatting with gadgeteer team member Dave Rees and he told me that he and his son (the Gadgeteer Kid) were in the process of building light sabers at the online Custom Light Saber Shop. I had never heard of such a thing, so I went and took a look and wow, there’s some hard core geeky goodness going on there! I told Dave that he MUST review these light sabers once he and his son have a chance to play with them. I’m not sure I convinced him though, so help me out and let him know that you also want to see more about these geek toys.
