Acer Ships Ginormous 8920G Gemstone Notebooks; 16:9, Dual HDDs, Blu-ray Included, Hernia Belt Not [Gemstone]

Thu, 17 Jul 2008 19:00:00 -0700

Acer's now shipping the 8920G Gemstone laptops, and they're even more impressive than we'd thought. While not the biggest screen we've seen on a portable, they sport an impressive 18.2-inch LCD at 1920x1080 with a 16:9 aspect ratio, perfect for watching movies on the integrated Blu-ray R/W drives. They're not light, tipping the scales at just over nine pounds, but their 1.6-inch thickness makes up for some of that. What's really interesting is Acer put dual hard drives in these machines, meaning you get 640GB total, probably the highest we've ever seen in a shipping portable. If you're looking for the ultimate in desktop replacements, these are a great place to start, if you can afford the $3,000 price tag. [Trusted Reviews]

BenQ ships greener 16:9 ratio computer LCDs

Fri, 08 Aug 2008 04:25:00 -0700

BenQ is concluding its week with the launch of two displays it believes will match two hotter trends. The designer E900HD and the simpler G900HD both have 18.5-inch, 1366x768 displays that match the same 16:9 ratio and resolution of a 720p-capable H...

BenQ debuts a pair of 18.5-inch 16:9 LCDs, but not for you

Fri, 08 Aug 2008 07:44:00 -0700

Filed under: Displays We're having a hard time getting stoked about this whole 16:9 trend: the market adoption rate and consumer embrace is uncannily similar to 16:10, which makes us fear some impending heretofore unknown aspect ratio that will hit the scene in a few years and draw money directly out of our wallets for unneeded upgrades. Phew, it was good to get that off our chest. All of that naturally doesn't mean we can't be terribly jealous as Asia, Europe and Latin America get to eat up these new 18.5-inch 16:9 LCDs from BenQ, the high-end E900HD (pictured) and the simpler G900HD, while us North Americans have to sit around staring at our way-too-tall LCDs. BenQ also snubbed us on that 21.5-inch E2200HDA, so we're starting to notice a trend here. These new displays run a 1366 x 768 resolution, and feature an energy-saving backlight system, 10:000:1 dynamic ratios, 5ms response times, while the E900HD offers aesthetic improvements, speakers and a headphone jack. No price just yet, but these should be out this month.[Via Electronista]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Acer launches £599 16:9 Blu-ray lappy

Fri, 19 Sep 2008 08:57:00 -0700

Acer's newly announced Aspire 6935G Gemstone notebook promises to be the cheapest laptop on the market featuring 16:9 aspect ratio and a Blu-ray drive this Christmas. For £599 the Acer Aspire 6935G will offer full 1920 x 1080 HD viewing on the go, whether or not you want to watch TV, using the in-built TV-tuner or the latest Blu-ray blockbuster. With Dolby Home Theater, CineSurround, Tuba CineBass booster and True5.1 surround sound it's doubtful that you will be disappointed with the performance of this baby. Bang for bucks Specs wise, you're getting pretty decent 'bang for your buck' as our American friends would say, with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Mobile Intel PM45 Express chip, and NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, with the option of up to 320GB of hard drive space. Acer also plans to make the slightly larger 8930G 18-inch screen version with up to 640GB of hard drive storage available for Christmas (price still tbc). At £599, it's almost worth not buying that PS3 or stand-alone Blu-ray player, and getting this instead this Christmas.
