Verizon Phasing out the Treo 755p

Tue, 22 Jul 2008 13:26:01 -0700

Despite appearing at the tail end of 2007, over six months after the device's debut on the Sprint network, a Verizon spokesperson has confirmed to PalmInfocenter that they are "phasing out" the Treo 755p in favor of the newer Centro. The Treo 755p is becoming increasingly scarce at Verizon retail outlets, with many having already removed their display units. The price of a new 755p on Verizon's online store has also been drastically reduced (after rebate) to match the Centro's same $99 pricetag (with 2yr contract). However, checking stock online, both as a new activation customer and an existing customer up for renewal, indicates that Verizon's 755p remains out of stock and has been so for several weeks now. Finally, Palm has traditionally issued some sort of ROM update for their devices before the gradual EOL process begins. It happened with the Treo 600, 650, 680, 700p and 700w, so the recent appearance of the Verizon 1.08 ROM update is another solid indication that the device has been updated to the satisfaction of all parties involved.

Palm Treo 755p - Verizon version now EOL

Wed, 23 Jul 2008 14:09:01 -0700

Apparently, a few key people at Verizon’s don’t read TamsPalm and don’t have too much industry insight either. Otherwise, they would know that the Centro can NOT replace a Treo because it is way to small for extended periods of use. Nevertheless, our boneheaded friends have decided to EOL their version of the 755 (pictured above). [...]

Adios, Treo 755p! We hardly Knew Ye...

Thu, 24 Jul 2008 00:00:00 -0700

Psst! Hey, Verizon customers! Hear this... If you've been eyeing a Treo 755p but have delayed pulling the trigger on getting one, you might want to jump online and act now. According to a report by Kris at PalmInfocenter, a Verizon spokesperson has confirmed that they are "phasing out" the Treo 755p in favor of the newer Centro. And if you go to the Verizon website, you can snatch yourself a 755p for the same price as a Centro, $99.99. Now to put that in context, in December 2007, when Verizon introduced the 755p, you could get it for $299.99 with a 2-year contract (after $100 instant online discount $50 mail-in rebate) or $579.00 directly from Palm without a contract. And as a refresher on what's hot about the 755p from Verizon, back when it launched, Andrew from our sister site, Treonauts wrote about the Treo Voice Dialing software (included in the box) which allows you to place a call, launch an application, even initiate a text or email message with just the sound of your voice. That's something iPhone folks dream about. He also remarked, "...I personally feel that the lighter and slimmer form-factor with no protruding antenna will make a significant difference for those Treonauts looking for a slicker alternative - it's certainly much better looking than the Treo 700p." Treo 755p vs. Centro? Verizon customers better act quickly before the decision is made for them. One more thing to note: The Verizon spokesperson said they will continue to provide customer support for the Treo 755p. You can probably count on Palm to support you as a Plan B.

Verizon turning the lights out on the Treo 755p

Wed, 23 Jul 2008 14:08:00 -0700

Filed under: Handsets, Palm, Verizon Wireless, Palm OSHere's an interesting factoid to chew on: the cycle between the first rumors that the Palm 755p was coming to Verizon and its launch was longer than the window of time between launch and sunset. Just think about that for a second. Seriously. Verizon has reported to Palm Infocenter that it's officially decommissioning the Palm OS-based smartphone -- the only in Verizon's lineup with strong ties to Palm's old-school industrial design -- in favor of the Centro, a smaller, friendlier, more consumer-oriented device. It seems like Big Red might be at risk of alienating some Garnet-loving business customers who aren't interested in carrying a device with a keyboard as small as the Centro's, and honestly, doesn't it feel like the 755p has at least a few more months of life yet? Or are we crazy?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Alltel Treo 755p Reduced to $99

Fri, 08 Aug 2008 14:05:01 -0700

Recent pricing activity suggests that the most recent Palm OS-based Treo may be heading out to pasture on yet another domestic CDMA carrier. This time, the Alltel network appears to be following in the footsteps of Verizon Wireless in clearing their remaining stocks of the Treo 755p. While several unsubstantiated online reports predated the official confirmation by a Verizon Wireless spokesperson that they were phasing out the 755p, no reports have yet circulated regarding Alltel's future plans. Despite the lack of any official announcement, it stands to reason that Palm's newest Garnet-based device, the Centro, might be headed to Alltel's CDMA network in the near future.
