Asus Eee PC 8G Held Up by Flash Hardware Issues [Asus Eee PC]

Mon, 04 Feb 2008 16:15:13 -0800

A couplet of bleh bits from Asus: They knocked down Eee shipment estimates to 700k from a million, and some "minor hardware issues" with the 8G's flash-based storage has crimped its rollout a bit. [Digitimes via EeeUser]

My "Tweener" Asus eee 8G Notebook

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 08:06:45 -0700

My Samsung i760 Windows Mobile device serves me well in many ways. I like the push mail now that we have our server updated, I use Pocket Word and Excel on occasion and I like to do a little bit of surfing the net. However, when I am stuck in an airport or for general web work on the go I really would like a little more screen than offered by your normal PocketPC/smartphone. I also don't want to lug my 8.5lb Dell Laptop everywhere. The solution for me - a machine sized somewhere between a smartphone and a full-sized laptop. I recently bought an Asus eee 8G subcompact notebook and it is a breeze to travel with. It weighs under a kilo, has an 8GB solid state drive (SSD) and I added 8GB of SD memory. The eee is equipped with a 7 inch screen(bright), built-in WiFi, Webcam, and LAN port, 3 usb ports and the 900 MHz Intel Celeron-M ULV 353 works for me. I upped the standard memory from 1GB to 2GB (~$30+). The Asus eee comes loaded with Xandros, a nice tame debian based linux. However, I cleared that out and loaded WindowsXP. Initially I used Nlite to strip WindowsXP down to about 800mb but I had left something out that kept my PDAnet from running. I decided to follow the exact directions in the Asus eee manual for loading and minimizing the WindowsXP footprint. The full install occupies less than 2GB of the SSD. I loaded Office Outlook, Excel and Word. I also loaded WinDVD for watching movies and the Verizon software to connect to my UM150 broadband card. Everything works. I am really enjoying the Asus eee's light weight and the larger screen for my basic computer needs. It is also kind of handy if you want to do some surfing while the TV commercials run. If you're looking for a "tweener" the Asus may be worth a try. I used site sponsor Ciao.com to find the best price. http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=3421Excellent Asus eee Forum: EeeUser
