All your GPS are belong to us
One day, our phones will do absolutely everything for us. It’s hard to believe how many different functions a basic phone can do, let alone more advanced smartphones like the Treo Pro or iPhone 3G. Phones are already outselling (and replacing) watches and digital cameras. Now, the standalone GPS unit has also lost the battle [...]

Hotel booking tool launched with GPS integration
Hotelzon, an upmarket (predominately) UK-based hotel chain, has launched a native S60 search and booking tool, Hotelzon Mobile, with GPS integration. All very swish, and well implemented, if a little over the top for something with less than 300 hotels in its portfolio, none of which I can afford(!) Still, a good effort. AT&T Boosts GPS With A-GPS
AT&T just announed they will support A-GPS or assisted GPS which is a technology which utilizes the best of the GPS and cellular worlds allowing faster and more accurate postition tracking. GPS while fairly accurate, can take minutes to initialize and requires a fairly strong signal to work accurately. Quite often in fact, GPS does not work indoors or in areas where there is dense foliage.A-GPS assisits GPS by allowing the cellular network to tell the device generally where it is located meaning the GPS receiver can narrow down its search for sattelites which in turn means faster and more accurate positioning results. In a press release, AT&T explains it will further launch two new navigation applications in coming weeks -- MapQuest Navigator and AAA Mobile Navigator. The new applications add to the company's AT&T Navigator and AT&T Navigator Global Edition offerings.Depending on how the public responds to this echnology, it is possible A-GPS will replace GPS as a technology meaning most GPS devices will have assistance from cellular towers. If this happens, it will add to the logic of a company like Nokia purchasing Navteq -- the company providing digital map information to many GPS devices. In addition, we can expect more service providers to roll out A-GPS as they look to monetize local search as they compete with Google. In fact, service providers have an opportunity of a lifetime to embed themselves in the local search business before companies like Google and Yahoo! take it over. The question is whether partners like AAA, Zagats and others will be strong enough partners to help providers worldwide compete with Google when customers are searching for local restaurants, department stores and more.Aside from the many Google ads, this is a good reference on A-GPS and here is a Wikipedia entry for more.

iPhone Application Watch: Flutter, iQualizer, iPedometer GPS, Wordsearch Unlimited, Network Utility, iMandelbrot, LondonCam, Nat Geo coming?
Flutter The Flutter application allows the iPhone to be used to send picture messages and geo-tagged locations to any mobile phone. In other words, it’s MMS - a feature which Apple still hasn’t made available natively. Sounds like a promising app from JuiceCaster that has had a few teething problems over launch weekend. iQualizer iQualizer is [...]

a-GPS Hits AT&T
AT&T has launched assisted-GPS technology (A-GPS) on its network to add location-based services (LBS) on its cell phones last week with two more navigation applications on the way: MapQuest Navigator and AAA Mobile navigator, underscoring its focus on GPS services. AAA Mobile navigator will offer audible turn-by-turn directions as well as AAA TourBook travel guide information such as Diamond Ratings for restaurants and lodgings, gas prices, movie reviews and show times. MapQuest Navigator will give turn-by-turn, voice-guided driving and walking directions, 3D moving maps, and access to 16 million points of interest from MapQuest's database. Users can get real-time traffic alerts, gas prices, gas station locations and AOL's City's Best restaurant and venue ratings. Conventional GPS often encounters difficulty providing reliable positions in poor signal conditions. For example when surrounded by tall buildings (as a result of multipath), or when the satellite signals are weakened by being indoors or under trees. Unlike true GPS, which searches satellites for latitude and longitude coordinates, A-GPS triangulates locations of cell phone customers using nearby landmarks to identify actual position. iPhone is not yet a good GPS, but it’sa start
I’ve been playing around with exercise/trail tracking applications for the iPhone recently. All of them are weak, though I think it’s the phone’s GPS and not the software that’s mainly to blame. I hope that some day a smart phone will ...
