Weird Tech: 'Idiot' Telecity engineer pulls plug on ISPs across UK
A Telecity engineer shut down a number of ISPs and their customers across the country after accidentally knocking out at least five Datahop ports at a London data centre late yesterday evening. According to a report by AAISP on the support blog, the chaos did not stop there, with the man then proceeding "to plug them back in randomly." Concerned night support staff contacted Telecity, The Register reports, which in turn contacted Datahop. Despite being "banned from touching anything," the man managed to move yet more cables before a Datahop engineer arrived to unravel the mess. Life in prison In more sobering news, India has become the first country to convict someone of a crime relying on evidence from a brain scanner. Debates raged this week, after reports resurfaced of an Indian woman sentenced in June to life in prison for murder, on the basis of a scan. Despite being neither peer-reviewed nor independently replicated, test results from the Brain Electrical Oscillations Signature test (BEOS) were cited as proof that the woman's brain held "experiential knowledge" that only the killer could possess. The BEOS software uses an EEG to interpret the electrical impulses from a suspect's brain, which apparently 'buzzes' when the crime is recounted to them. According to the inventor, the system can distinguish between a person's memory of a witnessed event and deeds they committed. Scientists in the US have labelled the application of the technology "fascinating," "ridiculous," "chilling" and "unconscionable". Gadget therapy Last week we brought you the Scan Toaster; this week the Computer Toaster. Sadly, on closer inspection it turned out to be little more than a PC housed in the classic Black & Decker Toast-It-All 4-Slice Toaster enclosure, but it's a step in the right direction… This four-port rotary phone USB hub, on the other hand, is far more functional. Turning the dial opens and closes the hubs, both preventing dust from settling and banishing boredom. Great stuff. And finally…A paramedic has been dismissed from his job after placing a prawn on the chin of a dying patient awaiting electric shock treatment, and joking: "Let's see if we can cook this prawn." Ambulance technician John Jones reportedly remarked: "360 joules won't cook a prawn," when the shock was administered, a medical panel was told this week. The wife of the patient, who died at hospital soon after the incident, said she was disgusted by his actions.

10% of UK will spend 14 years in front of TV
One in ten of us in the UK will spend over 14 years in front of our televisions with more than half regularly discussing the goggle box with our family and friends. Taking the average life expectancy of 78.7* years (we like a bit of precision), cable giant Virgin Media believes that 10 per cent of us spend the lion's share of a decade and a half as couch potatoes. Alarmingly, the same study discovered that 70 per cent of people admit that they 'often' sit in front of the television without caring too much what is on. Water-cooler moment? Still, at least it gives us something to talk about, with 52 per cent of us discussing television regularly with our loved ones. "There are currently more TV programmes than ever before, both on TV and on demand, but it seems some Brits still haven't broken free from the TV schedule, said Virgin Media's Ashley Stockwell. "Dipping in and out of live TV and TV on demand means that no one should be watching anything for the sake of it." But wait... Fortunately, Virgin Media does have the answer – and you may be shocked to learn that it is in fact its own service."With over 4,600 hours of TV programmes at our customers' fingertips through Virgin Media's TV on demand service, telly fans can watch what they want, when they want to," adds Stockwell. * Correct us if we're wrong but we reckon .7 of a year is 255.5 days.

Zed CEO Accuses British Watchdog Of "Destroying" UK D2C Content Market
Zed CEO Javier Perez Dolset has lashed out at the UK's premium rate phone regulator PhonepayPlus, blaming the watchdog for "destroying" the UK D2C content market. Dolset told Mobile Entertainment that the regulator's refusal to step in and deal with the subscription abuses taking place three years ago has killed off the UK business. Apparently, its Monstermob unit used to rake in £30 million, but now manages to squeeze out only £1 million a year. Perez Dolset also railed against the new rules PhonepayPlus put into place this summer to help stem the jump in customer complaints against mobile content sellers in the last year: "It makes me angry to see PhonepayPlus coming out with all this regulation now. Where were they three years ago? They did nothing, and now they're trying to make everyone else pay for what happened." Just for the record, the new rules that PhonepayPlus put in place says that any subscription service that doesn't allow a consumer to stop easily and quickly will be shut down and not allowed to operate. There are also proposals to try to cut down on unwanted mobile spam. It's a little unclear how this could be construed as "making everyone else pay for what happened"--surely, this is a rule that any game company operating on the up and up would be happy to abide by? Meanwhile, ZED's Finnish arm is on the EU's list of companies that need further investigating over ringtone scams.
