Heathrow becomes UK's largest Wi-Fi hotspot

Fri, 05 Sep 2008 07:01:00 -0700

Heathrow's controversial Terminal 5 building has been given a web-based boost, thanks to T-Mobile. The newest of the airport's terminals has been turned into a massive Wi-Fi hotspot. The Wi-Fi coverage is so big that it is said to be the size of 50 football pitches – making it the UK's largest Wi-Fi hotspot.Speed-wise, users can expect to get up to 8Mbps, when they log their laptops on.When is a hotspot not? There is a price to pay, however, unless you are lucky enough to be a T-Mobile customer. If you haven't signed up to T-Mobile, then expect to pay £5 for an hour's surfing or £10 for the whole day – just in case that essential bit of luggage never quite makes it.If you are a T-Mobile user and log on via the company's High-Speed Uplink Packet Access, then you will also be given faster broadband at the airport – 5x faster.

Microsoft Zune To Start Wi-Fi Downloads, Streaming

Wed, 10 Sep 2008 05:16:21 -0700

Microsoft Corp. said Monday that it is updating its Zune digital media player so the product can wirelessly download and stream songs when users have access to Wi-Fi networks. Free updates to the device's software and firmware, as well as more capacious hard drive-based and flash memory-based models, are set to be available Sept. 16. The software and firmware updates will build on the Zune's current wireless functionality by letting users with Wi-Fi access buy songs they hear over the Zune's built-in FM radio that are available through the Zune Marketplace online music store. And when users are in a Wi-Fi hotspot they will also be able to wirelessly log on to the Zune Marketplace and get music recommendations or use an on-screen keypad to type in song names, the company said. Then, chosen tunes will be able to be downloaded to the Zune. Zune owners can currently buy tunes one at a time, or pay $15 per month for a Zune Pass subscription, which gives access to every song in the catalog. With the new wireless features, Zune Pass holders will also be able to stream songs to their devices. Previously, the Zune's wireless feature -- one of the key things that sets it apart from market leader Apple Inc.'s iPod -- was limited to syncing music, movies and photos automatically with users' PCs and to sharing songs between Zune owners. Katy Asher, group marketing manager for the Zune, said the new wireless features are meant to help people find new music. She said the radio feature is about instant gratification, noting that the medium is "still one of the number-one places people find out about new music." Microsoft is also updating the Zune's hardware with the rollout of a model with a 120-gigabyte hard drive, which will cost $250, and a model with 16 GB of...

AT&T Extends Free Wi-Fi to Cheapest DSL Plans

Tue, 16 Sep 2008 14:30:32 -0700

AT&T seems to have added free Wi-Fi for its lowest-priced DSL customers: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the only one with this story, and they've garbled a few of the details, but checking AT&T's public sites seems to confirm it. Previously, AT&T customers had to either have a fiber-optic U-Verse subscription, or a DSL line running at 1.5 Mbps downstream or faster to get free Wi-Fi Basic. The Basic pool covers most of the 17,000 U.S. hotspots, excluding some hotels and premium locations. AT&T now says that any "FastConnect" subscription, even its DSL Lite offering of 768 Kbps down/128 Kbps up, qualifies for Wi-Fi Basic. The new statement reads: "AT&T Wi-Fi Basic service is FREE and already included if you subscribe to AT&T High Speed Internet, AT&T U-verseSM High Speed Internet, or AT&T FastAccess® DSL—all speed plans included. There's still a $10 per month fee to upgrade to Wi-Fi Premier, which includes over 70,000 locations worldwide, along with the missing U.S. hotspots, but their Web site says that you have to have a 1.5 Mbps or faster connection to get the $10 per month upgrade. That may be out of date. That ordering page also says you need 1.5 Mbps or faster for free Wi-Fi, so that tends to confirm it hasn't been fixed. (It's even hosted at sbc.com, so perhaps that's part of the vestige of an older system, harder to update.) Please note that iPhone subscribers still don't get free Wi-Fi on AT&T's Basic network.

Build Your Own Linksys WRT54GL Wi-Fi Monster Truck [DIY]

Fri, 19 Sep 2008 12:00:00 -0700

If you love R/C toys, this Wi-Fi router monster truck is definitely a project worth tackling. In a nutshell, a guy named Jonathan Bennet managed to rig a very hackable Linksys WRT54GL router to a $5 R/C monster truck so that it could be driven via the internet from up to 500 meters (1640 feet) away. Although not designed to be a how-to guide, there is more than enough information on the project page for someone with some knowledge to put one together at home.
