Samsung brings power to the netbook market

Fri, 19 Sep 2008 06:28:00 -0700

Samsung is the latest in a long line of computer manufacturers, which has decided to branch out in the increasingly popular, and overcrowded, netbook sector. TechRadar had been expecting this news since May, as the company had let slip it was thinking about going into this cheap-and-cheerful computer market. Matt finish The NC10 has been given a matt finish, a 10-inch 1024 x 600 display and a choice of quite substantial hard drives – 80GB, 120GB or 160GB.Memory-wise, you are looking at 1GB of 533MHz DDR 2 memory, which should be plenty to run the Linux OS or Windows XP. Which is pretty powerful, considering it's aimed at web surfers. The netbook comes in three colours: fetching blue, black and silver, and houses all the ports you have come to expect from a netbook: 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, 10/100Mb/s Ethernet, 3-in-one memory card reader, audio sockets, VGA port, 1.3MP webcam and three USB ports.Due in October, the NC10 will cost around £329.

Zed CEO Accuses British Watchdog Of "Destroying" UK D2C Content Market

Fri, 19 Sep 2008 16:10:32 -0700

Zed CEO Javier Perez Dolset has lashed out at the UK's premium rate phone regulator PhonepayPlus, blaming the watchdog for "destroying" the UK D2C content market. Dolset told Mobile Entertainment that the regulator's refusal to step in and deal with the subscription abuses taking place three years ago has killed off the UK business. Apparently, its Monstermob unit used to rake in £30 million, but now manages to squeeze out only £1 million a year. Perez Dolset also railed against the new rules PhonepayPlus put into place this summer to help stem the jump in customer complaints against mobile content sellers in the last year: "It makes me angry to see PhonepayPlus coming out with all this regulation now. Where were they three years ago? They did nothing, and now they're trying to make everyone else pay for what happened." Just for the record, the new rules that PhonepayPlus put in place says that any subscription service that doesn't allow a consumer to stop easily and quickly will be shut down and not allowed to operate. There are also proposals to try to cut down on unwanted mobile spam. It's a little unclear how this could be construed as "making everyone else pay for what happened"--surely, this is a rule that any game company operating on the up and up would be happy to abide by? Meanwhile, ZED's Finnish arm is on the EU's list of companies that need further investigating over ringtone scams.
